American Gold Star Mothers

Congressionally chartered organization founded in 1928 for mothers who have lost a son or daughter in service to the United States. Named for the gold star that families displayed in their windows during the First World War to signify a death in service. Provides peer support among bereaved mothers through local chapters, participates in VA hospital volunteer service, and maintains a presence in national remembrance observances including Gold Star Mother's Day. Membership requires that the mother be a U.S. citizen or have a child who served in the U.S. armed forces.
