AMVETS (American Veterans)

Federally chartered corporation formed in 1944 by World War II veterans, now roughly 250,000 members across more than 1,400 posts nationwide, headquartered in Hyattsville, Maryland. Mission is to enhance and safeguard entitlements for all American veterans who served honorably and improve quality of life for them, their families, and their communities through leadership, advocacy, and services. Maintains VA-accredited national service officers who prepare, present, and prosecute VA claims free of charge for members and nonmembers alike. Testifies annually before the joint House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committee VSO hearing. Family of organizations includes the AMVETS National Service Foundation, Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of AMVETS, Junior AMVETS, and AMVETS Riders.
