Fry Scholarship (VA)

Full Post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits for surviving spouses and children of service members who died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001 — named for Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry, killed in action in Iraq in 2006, who left behind a wife and three young children. Each eligible family member holds an independent 36-month entitlement — benefits are not shared or divided. Covers full in-state tuition at public schools, up to $29,920 per year at private schools (2025-2026), monthly housing allowance, and $1,000/yr books stipend. Children eligible ages 18-33. Surviving spouses may remarry and retain eligibility under a 2025 rule change. The service member does not need to have died in combat — line-of-duty deaths during training, accidents, or service-related illness all qualify.
