HUD-VASH (VA Supportive Housing)

The nation's largest permanent supportive housing program for homeless veterans — combines HUD Housing Choice Vouchers (covering most or all of rent on the private market) with VA clinical case management services that address the health and life challenges behind homelessness. $34M in new vouchers allocated in 2025. Veterans pay only a small portion of monthly income toward rent; the rest is federally covered. Eligibility: must be eligible for VA healthcare, currently homeless or facing imminent homelessness, and meet local Public Housing Authority income limits. Since January 2021, veterans with Other Than Honorable discharges can also access HUD-VASH. Apply through your local VA Medical Center — you cannot apply through standard Section 8 queues.
