National 501(c)(3) supporting military and veteran entrepreneurs, renamed from the StreetShares Foundation. Best known for the Military Entrepreneur Challenge — a live pitch-competition format in which veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses present their business concepts to a panel of judges and compete for grant awards typically ranging from $1,000 to $15,000, judged on business concept, community impact, and need. Applicants must own at least 51% of their business. Note: this is a grant and pitch-competition program, not a lender — it does not issue business loans. Veterans seeking debt capital should work through an SBA Veterans Business Outreach Center, which can refer them to SBA loan programs and vetted lenders.

The only national organization advocating for and supporting both currently serving service women and women veterans, regardless of rank, branch, or years of service. Founded in 2007 by women veterans struggling to get VA claims approved, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2009. Early work established that post-traumatic stress resulting from sexual assault should be recognized by VA the way combat stress is — a change that reshaped MST claims. Today combines legislative and policy advocacy on combat integration, harassment and assault, reproductive health care, and veterans benefits with direct support: one-on-one case management, VA claims navigation, mental health and housing referrals, vetted pro bono legal referrals from military law experts, and a confidential 24/7 emergency assistance hotline at 888-502-8755. Leadership development program of the George W. Bush Institute, launched in 2018, that builds the skills and scales the impact of people working across the veteran and military family space. A first-of-its-kind program convening active-duty service members, veterans, military spouses, and civilians from diverse sectors over a five-month curriculum taught by nationally known experts in veteran issues and leadership. Scholars complete a leadership project applied directly to a veteran problem — past efforts include advocating for veterans' legal needs, opening employment paths for military spouses overseas, and building support programs for Medal of Honor recipients and families. Student Veterans of America (SVA)
NonprofitNational organization supporting veterans in higher education through a network of more than 1,500 chapters on college and university campuses across the country and abroad. Chapters provide peer community, mentorship, and a bridge from military to student life; nationally, SVA advocates on the GI Bill and education policy, runs leadership and career programming, and conducts research on veteran academic outcomes through its Million Records Project. National nonprofit founded in 2007 by author and illustrator Trevor Romain and Ronda Englander to build resilience in school-age military children facing the specific stresses of military life: multiple deployments, reintegration when a parent returns, moving every two to three years, a parent's visible or invisible injuries, and grief over the loss of a family member. Best known for its Comfort Kits — four specialized resource kits, each addressing one of those transitions, using humor and personal stories to open kids up to talking about the tough stuff. Delivers through kits, in-person school assemblies and the With You All the Way! Tour, and the online Comfort Crew Academy resiliency platform. Core objectives are increasing communication within families, teaching kids to understand and express their feelings, and making sure every military child knows they are not alone. The War Horse

Investigative reporting that has changed military law, sparked federal action, and given veterans a platform their stories would otherwise never reach. Scholarship and lifelong leadership program founded in 2008 to honor Pat Tillman, the NFL safety who left his career to serve as an Army Ranger and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. Directly funds active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses — including surviving spouses — pursuing full-time undergraduate, graduate, or professional degrees at accredited U.S. institutions. The unrestricted award averages roughly $10,000 per year and covers tuition, fees, books, and living expenses without affecting GI Bill eligibility. Beyond money, Scholars join a lifelong national community with leadership summits, professional development, career support, and mini-grants for certifications and research. Selection is rigorous and values-based — service, scholarship, humble leadership, and impact — with about 60 chosen from roughly 2,000 applicants each year (a ~3% acceptance rate). National security leadership institute whose Defense Council cohort is composed largely of veterans and frontline civilians with ongoing professional interest in defense and intelligence, some still serving and others working in business, medicine, and policy. Truman recruits, trains, and positions its members — more than 2,000 across 16 chapters in 47 states — to lead on national security issues, providing skills training, seminars, a national network, and pathways into policy and public leadership. Admission is competitive and by application, with roughly 100 to 150 new members admitted each year across three cohorts. Openly progressive in orientation, and included here specifically to balance the conservative-leaning veteran leadership programs on this map — the Navigator is nonpartisan and maps veteran-serving leadership pipelines across the full political spectrum. NonprofitThe largest nonprofit provider of housing and supportive services to homeless and at-risk veterans in the country, operating on a Housing First model.
